What is Power-to-X?

Power-to-X (PtX) describes processes that convert renewable electricity into other energy carriers or products: hydrogen through electrolysis, and derivatives such as ammonia, methanol and synthetic fuels. PtX allows renewable energy to decarbonise sectors that are hard to electrify directly, such as heavy industry, shipping and aviation.

For hydrogen specifically, see our guide to Green Hydrogen in Oman.

Why PtX projects are complex

A PtX project combines several large systems: solar and wind generation, often storage, electrical infrastructure, electrolysers, water treatment or desalination, synthesis plants, storage and export facilities. The economics depend on how well these systems are sized relative to each other.

Technology assessment and selection

  • Electrolyser technologies: alkaline, PEM and emerging options
  • Synthesis routes for ammonia, methanol and e-fuels
  • Water supply, desalination and treatment
  • Balance-of-plant, safety and integration considerations

Techno-economic analysis and optimisation

Optimising the ratio of renewable capacity, storage and electrolyser capacity is central to the levelised cost of hydrogen (LCOH). Hourly modelling of renewable profiles against process constraints identifies the lowest-cost configuration and the trade-offs between utilisation and capital cost.

Strategy, market and procurement

VESS supports strategy and market assessment, offtake considerations and procurement and contract management — helping developers and industrial players move from concept to structured, financeable projects.

Frequently asked questions

What products can Power-to-X produce?

Green hydrogen, green ammonia, e-methanol, synthetic fuels and other chemicals made using renewable electricity.

What drives the cost of green hydrogen?

The cost of renewable electricity, electrolyser capital cost and utilisation, water supply and financing costs are the main drivers.

Does VESS provide PtX feasibility studies?

Yes. VESS provides technology assessment, techno-economic analysis and optimisation, strategy and market assessment, and procurement and contract management for PtX projects.
