The Omani grid context
Oman's power system includes the Main Interconnected System (MIS) operated with the Oman Electricity Transmission Company (OETC), the Dhofar power system and smaller networks. As renewable penetration rises, grid studies become central to project development: connection capacity, system strength, voltage and frequency behaviour all need to be demonstrated before an IPP can connect.
Types of grid and power studies
- Load flow and contingency (N-1) analysis
- Short-circuit and protection coordination studies
- Transient and dynamic stability studies
- Power quality: harmonics, flicker and voltage unbalance
- Reliability, availability and maintainability (RAM) studies
- Renewable integration and grid code compliance studies
Grid code compliance for renewable projects
Solar, wind and BESS plants must meet Oman Grid Code requirements for fault ride-through, reactive power capability, voltage and frequency control. Compliance studies and simulation models are needed during design and are verified again at commissioning.
Power quality and disturbance investigations
Critical industrial loads such as oil and gas facilities are sensitive to voltage dips and disturbances. VESS has carried out an OETC grid station disturbance and performance assessment serving a critical oil and gas facility — combining measurement review, event analysis and practical recommendations.
Substations, interconnection and microgrids
Grid services extend to substation design review, large power interconnections, transmission and distribution infrastructure, microgrids and smart-grid concepts, and the integration of imports and storage into the network.
System-level renewable integration
At a national level, VESS has assessed renewable integration and grid implications in support of Oman Vision 2040, and carried out the Sur IPP 220 kV grid reliability assessment (300 MW) for the MIS.
Frequently asked questions
Which grid studies are needed to connect a solar plant in Oman?
Typically load flow, short-circuit, stability, power quality and grid code compliance studies, supported by validated simulation models for the transmission operator.
What is a RAM study?
A reliability, availability and maintainability study quantifies how often equipment is likely to fail, how long it takes to restore, and the resulting availability of the plant or network.
Can VESS investigate power quality problems at an existing facility?
Yes. VESS carries out disturbance and power quality assessments, as on the OETC grid station serving a critical oil and gas facility.
